Rum Smuggler Barrel Aged Stout

Rum Smuggler Barrel Aged Stout

Grab a beer and discover the back story to Australia's first barrel aged gluten free beer.

Kristian (TWØBAYS Head Brewer) and Kip (JimmyRum Head Distiller) discuss rum, barrel aging, rambunctiousness and rebellion.

Australia's First Gluten Free Barrel Aged Beer

Rum Smuggler is the first of it's kind - brewed with millet and rice, it's a barrel aged beer like no other - 100% gluten free - so finally, everyone can experience the decadence of a barrel aged imperial stout.

A specially brewed imperial stout matured in ex RumRum American oak barrels. From the first sniff, the rich rum aroma prepares the tastebuds for the indulgence they are about to experience. Rich, dark, and decadent, this 10.5% imperial stout is perfectly balanced with harmonious flavours and richness to counter the high ABV.

Why Imperial?

Imperial stout was originally brewed by the major porter brewers in London as an “extra stout” porter for export to the Baltic countries and Russia from the late 18th century. The beer acquired the "Imperial" title as it gained popularity with the Russian imperial court of Catherine the Great.

Neighbours Collaborating

Our home on the Mornington Peninsula is known as one of Australia's great food and drink destinations, so it's no surprise that our friends and neighbours, JimmyRum - Victoria's first craft rum distillery - are held in high regard for their outstanding Rum. Named the Best Hybrid Still Rum Under 5 YO in the world in 2023, RumRum Batch #002 secured Gold at the World Rum Awards.

JimmyRum

It all started with a mad 2 a.m. light-bulb moment - an idea that would take seven years to come to life: the dream to build Victoria’s first dedicated craft rum distillery.

With a bucket-load of passion and a touch of rambunctiousness, JimmyRum presents the first Victorian-produced rums.

RumRum

RumRum is our pride and joy - our reason for being - and the one we all love to spend our time with.

Crafted to be what we call a “sessionable sipping rum,” it’s all about striking the right balance of depth and complexity. Not so easy that it becomes boring after a while, and not so intense that it’s too much after the first glass.

Made from Australian-grown and owned molasses, distilled in our gorgeous Italian copper still Matilda, then aged in 200 L ex-bourbon barrels and released as single casks or small-batch blends.

Each batch of RumRum is cut (ABV adjusted between 45–55%) to be the best sipping rum it can be - a spirit to raise the gauntlet to fine whiskies and brandies, and to show the world what rum can be.

A sipping rum to be savoured neat, over ice, or with just a drop or two of water.

Batch 007

Seven batches in, and we broke one of our own rules.

RumRum Batch 007 is a seven-barrel blend. We normally stop at four. Sensible. Controlled. Very adult.

But while test-blending barrels ahead of decanting, the rum had other ideas. Each extra barrel made the blend richer, rounder, and more interesting. So we kept going.

It doesn’t always work like that.

This time, it really, really did.
