The Best Gluten Free Beer in Australia: What the Judges Say

TWØBAYS is Australia's most awarded dedicated gluten free brewery of the past year. In the 2025–26 awards season we:

won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup
won Champion Australian Brewery at the New Zealand Beer Awards
won seven medals at the Australian International Beer Awards
became the first gluten free beer ever voted into the GABS Hottest 100

That adds up to 12 medals, two major honours and a Hottest 100 ranking. Most of these came from competing head-to-head with regular beers made from barley and wheat.

Our results show the quality gap between barley beers and gluten free equivalent styles has gone.

GABS Hottest 100 2025: #58, voted by Australian beer drinkers

The GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers is Australia's biggest public beer vote. TWØBAYS Pale Ale placed #58 in the 2025 countdown, making it the first gluten free beer to make the top 100 in the vote's history.

Judges didn't decide this one. Everyday drinkers voted a gluten free beer ahead of hundreds of mainstream craft beers.

World Beer Cup 2026: silver in the Gluten-Free Beer category

The World Beer Cup is known as the "Olympics of Beer". In 2026 it drew 8,166 entries from 1,644 breweries across 50 countries, blind-judged by 255 judges.

Rum Smuggler Barrel Aged Imperial Stout won silver in the Gluten-Free Beer category, against 50 entries from around the world. The podium was:

TWØBAYS was the only Australian brewery to win a medal at the 2026 World Beer Cup. It's also our third World Beer Cup podium in a row:

2024: Gold for Session Ale
2025: Gold for Pacific Ale
2026: Silver for Rum Smuggler

Rum Smuggler is a 10.5% imperial stout brewed with millet and rice and aged in ex-rum American oak barrels. It's the first gluten free barrel-aged beer produced in Australia.

Australian International Beer Awards 2026: seven medals

The Melbourne Royal Australian International Beer Awards (AIBAs) is one of the largest annual beer competitions in the world. In 2026 it received 2,221 entries from 379 exhibitors. The AIBAs don't have a gluten free category, so our beers were judged in the same classes as everyone else's.

We competed as a medium-sized brewery for the first time and won seven medals: two gold, three silver and two bronze.

TWØBAYS IPA won its third consecutive AIBA gold and received the Consistency of Excellence award.
Rum Smuggler was shortlisted in the top five Specialty Beers out of 120 entries in the category.

New Zealand Beer Awards 2026: Champion Australian Brewery

At the New Zealand Beer Awards in Dunedin, TWØBAYS was named Champion Australian Brewery. It's the first time a gluten free brewery has won the trophy. The competition had 660 entries from 74 breweries.

Put simply, we believe everyone over 18 should be able to get a beer if they want one, even if you are avoiding gluten.

TWØBAYS is Australia's dedicated gluten free craft brewery with a taproom, based in Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula. We don't brew with barley or wheat, and we don't remove gluten after brewing. Every beer is brewed from naturally gluten free grains like millet, buckwheat and rice, in a brewery that has never handled gluten. Our beers are endorsed by Coeliac Australia.

Because gluten free is all we make, all of our brewing effort goes into quality and choice with a wide range of beer styles so everyone can find something they love.
