Beer Crawls For All: Surry Hills, Sydney

Beer Crawls For All is our series of craft beer crawls where everyone gets a beer, including gluten free drinkers. Every stop pours or sells TWØBAYS gluten free beer, so nobody at the table is stuck on soft drinks while their mates try the tap list.

Getting there and home by public transport

Getting to the start (Central)

  • Train, metro or light rail to Central. Central is Sydney's biggest transport hub. Sydney Trains, the M1 metro, intercity services and the L1, L2 and L3 light rail all stop there.
  • Walk up Foveaux Street. Leave Central on the eastern (Elizabeth Street) side and walk up Foveaux Street to Keg & Brew. It takes about 6 minutes.

Getting home from the finish (Crown Street)

  • Light rail: The Surry Hills light rail stop on Devonshire Street is about 5 minutes' walk from Yulli's. Both the L2 (Randwick) and L3 (Kingsford) lines stop there, and they run back through Central into the CBD.
  • Walk back to Central: It's around 15 minutes downhill from Crown Street.

Services change often, so check transportnsw.info or the Opal Travel app on the day.

Where to eat gluten free at the start of the crawl

Start as you mean to go on: with a TWØBAYS on tap and a gluten free lunch at Keg & Brew. Gluten free diners report marked menu options, gluten free burger buns and pizza bases and a dedicated fryer. It's one of the easiest pub lunches in Surry Hills for coeliacs. Tell staff you're coeliac when you order.

The stops

Stop 1: Keg & Brew Hotel

26 Foveaux St, Surry Hills · Open daily from 10am

We start at Keg & Brew because you can start your crawl with a TWØBAYS on tap and eat properly before the walk. The pub has four levels and an open-air rooftop bar with a pizza oven. With dozens of beer taps, your mates will have plenty to work through while you settle in with a gluten free beer and a gluten free burger or pizza.

Stop 2: Forrester's

336 Riley St, Surry Hills · Walk: ~400 m / ~6 min, up Foveaux St · Closed Mondays

Forrester's is a classic corner pub with plenty of character, several different rooms and a dog-friendly welcome. It's a relaxed place for your second TWØBAYS of the day.

Stop 3: Taphouse Sydney

122 Flinders St, Darlinghurst · Walk: ~700 m / ~11 min · Closed Mondays, opens 4pm Tue–Thu, from 11:30am Fri–Sun

This is the longest walk of the crawl. It takes you just over the Darlinghurst border to Taphouse, which has a big beer list above the bar and a lively, pre-game crowd when the Swans, Roosters or Tahs are playing nearby. Grab a TWØBAYS and settle in.

Stop 4: The Clock

470 Crown St, Surry Hills · Walk: ~650 m / ~10 min, back to Crown St

The Clock is a Crown Street institution, with a buzzing ground-floor bar and a busy upstairs balcony. It's a good spot for a TWØBAYS in the late afternoon before dinner.

Stop 5: Yulli's

417 Crown St, Surry Hills · Walk: ~50 m / ~1 min, just across Crown St · Closed Mondays

The finish line is almost directly across the road. Yulli's is a much-loved vegan restaurant and bar that's been part of Crown Street for years. Order a TWØBAYS, grab a table and get stuck into dinner.

After the crawl: gluten free dinner at Yulli's

Yulli's marks its menu with (GF) for gluten free dishes and (GF*) for dishes that can be made gluten free on request. Everything is plant based, so it's also a great option if anyone in your group is vegan or dairy free. Yulli's says some dishes are cooked in shared oil and on shared equipment, so let your server know you're coeliac and ask them to steer you to the safest options. If you're a group, the banquet is an easy way to try a bit of everything. Just flag gluten free when you book.

  • Opening hours: Tue–Sat 12pm–11pm, Sun 12pm–10pm, closed Mondays
  • Bookings: Recommended on weekends, and a must for bigger groups

Tips for a gluten free beer crawl

  • Always ask for TWØBAYS by name. Most craft beers are brewed with barley or wheat. "Gluten reduced" isn't the same as gluten free. TWØBAYS is brewed without any gluten-containing grains.
  • Tell every kitchen you're coeliac. None of these venues has a dedicated gluten free kitchen.
  • Pace yourself. Five stops is plenty. Drink water between venues and eat properly at Keg & Brew and again at Yulli's.
  • Check opening hours on the day, especially Monday to Thursday.
  • Leave the car at home. Parking in Surry Hills is hard to find, and the crawl starts near Central and finishes near the light rail.
