The humble Pale Ale is a true Australian classic. For some it's the start of a craft beer journey, for others it's a great session ale or maybe a refreshing quench on a hot day. It's something to everyone – unless you are gluten intolerant.

We are not the first brewery in Australia to brew a Pale Ale completely free of gluten, but our mission is to recreate the craft beer experience for those who have been unable to indulge (for glutenous reasons) to date.

TWØBAYS' Pale Ale is an easy-drinking American hopped beer, brewed with millet, buckwheat and rice, giving off subtle, but beautiful citrus aromas. It's also endorsed by Coeliac Australia and proudly carries proof of our Independent Brewer's Association membership.

There were a few trials and tribulations along the way as we endeavoured to brew the Pale Ale we are so proud of today; in the end we brewed two! And as the gluten free community has long been yearning for this craft beer experience, we asked its Victorian contingent to help us decide which to launch with at the 2018 Melbourne Gluten Free Expo. More than 2,000 tasters were sampled over the course of a weekend and 60% voted for the Pale Ale that is now in cans. The other Pale Ale went down very well at our Dromana Taproom!

What were some of the challenges faced with gluten free grains?

“Brewing with gluten free grains, such as millet, rice and buckwheat, offers a fresh set of challenges and new sensory experiences,” says head brewer Andrew Gow, who has 20 years’ experience in craft beer (including Mornington Peninsula Brewery and Mountain Goat), although this is his first venture with gluten free grains.

“We hope those who need or choose a gluten free diet enjoy our first offering in cans. And it’s early days, but I see no reason why we can’t make beers for everyone to enjoy, gluten intolerant or not.”

Why a Pale Ale first?

"Australia loves a Pale Ale," says CEO and Founder Richard Jeffares, who missed the craft beer experience after he was diagnosed as Coeliac in 2015.

"With our first release hitting customers at the start a very hot summer, a refreshingly light, but tasty, Pale Ale was the natural starting point. It's what I longed for most following my diagnosis."

“Gluten free consumers have been visiting their local bottle shops and venues encouraging licensees to stock and serve our Pale Ale, and the beer is now in fridges at more than 50 sites across Victoria (and now NSW, SA and ACT).”

“One happy TWØBAYS customer even entered our Pale Ale into the Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers 2018 and – despite the very late entry – we were ecstatic to be voted the 25th Hottest New Beer for 2018 – and the highest-ranked gluten free beer.”

“As a Coeliac, I know I wanted a great-tasting beer to drink at social events with friends and family – and that’s what we now have on the market.”

We are also very excited to be in fridges at Brae Restaurant, which has been voted Australia's top restaurant by Financial Review for two years running!

It’s great to have our Pale Ale in some of the most famous beer haunts in Victoria; Stomping Ground Brewery, Carwyn Cellars, Grape & Grain and Bright Brewery to name a few. We love the fact that other breweries recognise the need to provide a safe gluten free beer for their customers.
